1:12Now PlayingStrengthening Tropical Storm Zeta is expected to become a hurricane Monday on a track for Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula resorts and then likely move on for a possible landfall on the central U.S. Gulf Coast in midweek.
Zeta is expected to make landfall Monday night as a Category 1 hurricane before crossing the Yucatan peninsula and continuing into the Gulf of Mexico and a potential strike on the U.S. storm-weary Gulf coast later in the week.
Residents were boarding up windows on Monday, and some tourists were eager to return home.
Felix Martinez, a tourist from San Luis Potosí,had travelled with his family to Cancún but was leaving on Wednesday.
He managed some sightseeing - but has since returned to his hotel so that the possible hurricane doesn't catch him out on the streets.
Ecuadorian tourist Norma, who is on vacation with her husband, said they are returning home Monday afternoon and fear that the airports will close.
Local authorities are taking the storm seriously, but with a distinctly less alarmed tone than when Delta strengthened to a Category 4 storm off the coast.
Quintana Roo state suspended alcohol sales Monday and Gov. Carlos Joaquín González said everyone should be off the streets by Monday afternoon.
"There is no need to do panic buying, we mustn't be scared", Joaquin said.
State officials reported nearly 60,000 tourists in the state as of midweek.
The state government said 71 shelters were being readied for tourists or residents who might need them.
