Aug 27, 20212:15Now PlayingEight-year-old Grace Carrick is the youngest member of The Gills girls science club, and her eyes light up when she remembers swimming with sharks and rays.
"The first time I swam with stingrays, I was a little scared, but then the fear went away, and I had courage."
Along with nine other girls, Grace learns from prestigious scientists and academics who encourage them to get closer to the world of science.
Diana Pazmiño, a shark scientist and researcher at the Gaias campus of the Universidad San Francisco de Quito, on San Cristobal Island, is the founder and coordinator of this initiative.
Pazmiño said the initiative was born in response to the inequality of opportunities for young girls.
"When they see female scientists and professors invited to come to teach them, they can see that these are valid alternatives too."
The girls hold meetings once a month and can listen to talks by international scientists invited to the campus, visit the molecular laboratory and use high-powered microscopes.
The Gills members also accompany researchers to collect samples to be processed in the labs but also pick up trash from the beaches and the ocean.
Another 10 applicants have applied to join the "Chicas con Agallas" (Girls with Gills).
Soon there will be a total of 20, which will require new volunteers, often students from the campus.
