as posted by the channelDozens of pro-Palestinian protesters were arrested at an encampment set up by New York University students calling for the school to divest from weapons manufacturers and the Israeli government amid the war in Gaza. More than 100 New York Police Department officers entered the encampment to begin making arrests shortly after 8:30pm, following warnings of arrest for trespassing.
A conflict has been waged for years on US college campuses over how to balance the right to free speech with the need to provide a space where students feel safe. The latest tension is over the Israel-Hamas war. Universities have reported a burst of antisemitic acts on campuses stemming from Israel’s overwhelming military response to the surprise Hamas attack on Oct. 7 that left 1,200 people dead in Israel.
The campuses’ varied responses to anti-Israel and pro-Palestinian discourse have drawn scrutiny from Congress and resulted in the resignation of presidents of two elite universities. More recently, administrators have sent in police to make arrests and break up encampments at Columbia, Yale and New York University, where activists were calling for divestment from Israel and condemning the Israeli military campaign that the Hamas-run health ministry says has left more than 34,000 people dead in Gaza.
