Historical Myth and the Second Amendment, Part One

This is not a political video and as such political comments will be fairly out of place. I look forward to your political comments and the impending controversy. At least, that's what I keep telling myself.

Often times when that most controversial pieces of American constitutional law, the rights of the American citizenry to 'keep and bear arms,' is discussed, it is done so in an historical setting. This makes sense, given how significant that right is to the mythos of early American history and the initial founding of the Republic. Indeed, whenever the Second Amendment is defended from its supposed attackers, it is done as a sort of warning; than an unarmed populace is susceptible to State tyranny and over-extension, and that it may ultimately be necessary for 'the People' to defend their 'inalienable rights' via force of arms against any such encroachment. The chief example of this, naturally, is the American War of Independence, where- so it is argued- precisely this took place.

But, how authentic is this cultural memory of the Revolutionary War? Were the allotments provided by what would later be codified as the Second Amendment enough to win American independence? Or has our understanding of the conflict, and how it was fought and won, been corrupted over the years by an idealization of the Militiaman, at the expense of the other men who fought and suffered in it?
