as posted by the channelIn 1970, 16-year-old Canadian Debbie Brill was the first woman athlete to perform a six-foot high jump. The Mission, B.C. went on the represent Canada for 12 years straight before taking time off to have a baby. Some were unsure whether she would be able to return to athletics. Brill was not one for critics and returned form after a baby at the ripe old age of 29. Brill had always been unlike other athletes, happy to compete for the love of sport. When Hollywood came calling, wanting to include her in a film about female athletes, Debbie Brill said no and kept on competing. Just after her return in 1982, the fifth estate’s Adrienne Clarkson talked to Brill about her reluctance to compete for money, and her views on marriage and motherhood. Brill went on to set a Canadian and world record of 6 feet 6 inches. Her Canadian record still stands and she has kept jumping for the love of the sport well into her 50s when she set a masters 45+ and later 50+ world record that still stands.
