Homer first gained notice as an artist-correspondent for Harper's Weekly during the Civil War. In his post-war career, Homer depicted various aspects of American life with a focus on frontier and marine themes. Professor Lubin explores the symbolism in Homer's work, including commentary about Gilded Age society as well as meditations on nature.
