Washington Today (12-14-23): House passes NDAA with controversial surveillance authority extension

House passes the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) conference report on a bipartisan vote, but more than 70 Republicans vote 'no' because the final bill did not include several so-called 'culture war' provisions on such issues as abortion or treatment of transgender service members, and the bill did include a extension of the FISA Section 702 warrantless wiretap authorization for non-Americans overseas, which has been controversial after FBI disclosures that U.S. citizens were targeted in the past.

Senate Majority Chuck Schumer (R-NY says negotiations on U.S. border security reform are still ongoing…. and making progress towards a deal, so the Senate will be in session next week to be ready to vote. Republicans say they want that U.S. border security to be part of national security spending package that includes aid for Ukraine.

National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan is in Israel meeting with that country's leaders and, according to the White House, telling them it is important to bring down to the intensity of the war in Gaza in the near future.

President Joe Biden visits the National Institutes of Health in Maryland to discuss prescription drug price control measures.

Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) gives a farewell speech.
