1:45Now PlayingHouse Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) on Wednesday called on Republicans to agree to "dramatic" reforms to immigration enforcement operations in order to move forward on a funding bill to reopen the Homeland Security Department.
"Republicans have decided they would rather shut down FEMA, shut down TSA, and shut down the Coast Guard than get ICE under control," he said at a press conference on the fifth day of the partial government shutdown.
The Democratic leader said the American people "know that ICE needs to be reined in," citing widespread concern over the agency's conduct — particularly amid recent immigration enforcement operations in Minnesota that sparked public outrage and multiple investigations into federal agents' actions.
"The American people are horrified by what they have seen, but instead of fixing the problem, which Democrats have given our Republican colleagues an opportunity to do, they've shut down crucial parts of the Department of Homeland Security," Rep. Jeffries said.
