“The Cuban government is talking with us. They’re in a big deal of trouble, as you know. They have no money, no anything right now,” he told reporters before departing for Texas. “Maybe we’ll have a friendly takeover of Cuba. We could very well end up having a friendly takeover of Cuba.”
President Trump imposed a fuel blockade at the end of January in an effort to increase pressure on the government, which relies heavily on imports. The United Nations warned earlier this week that life on the island was “becoming fragile” amid increased strains on health care, water services and food distribution.
“Cuba is, to put it mildly, a failed nation,” President Trump said. “It’s really right now a nation in deep trouble, and they want our help.”
U.S. officials reportedly met Thursday with Raúl Guillermo Rodríguez Castro, the grandson of former President Raúl Castro, who is considered the country’s de facto leader.
