2:44Now PlayingDefense Secretary Pete Hegseth said Monday that the U.S. military operation against Iran would not be "endless" and declined to rule out the possibility of deploying U.S. troops on the ground.
"To the media outlets and political left screaming 'endless wars,' stop. This is not Iraq. This is not endless," he said at a press briefing.
"Our generation knows better, and so does this president. He called the last 20 years of nation building wars dumb, and he's right. This is the opposite. This operation is a clear, devastating, decisive mission: destroy the missile threat, destroy the navy, no nukes."
Secretary Hegseth said the U.S. does not currently have boots on the ground in Iran but would not rule out that option, criticizing past administrations for signaling plans in advance.
"We're not going to go into the exercise of what we will or will not do," he said. "Why in the world would we tell you, you, the enemy, anybody, what we will or will not do in pursuit of an objective? We fight to win."
