2:51Now PlayingNew York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said improvised explosive devices thrown near the mayor's residence during protests Saturday are being investigated as an act of "ISIS-inspired terrorism."
"Preliminary test results determined that these were not hoax devices, nor smoke bombs. They were improvised explosive devices that could have caused serious injury or death," she said at a press conference Monday.
The devices were thrown during an anti-Islam demonstration and counterprotest near Gracie Mansion, the official residence of Mayor Zohran Mamdani, the city's first Muslim mayor.
The mayor and his wife were not home when the devices were thrown. One of the devices contained triacetone triperoxide, a "highly-volatile" homemade explosive also known as TATP.
Police arrested two counterprotesters — an 18-year-old and a 19-year-old from Pennsylvania — in connection with the devices.
Commissioner Tisch said police also discovered a third "possible suspicious device" and materials consistent with the first two devices in a car, though it tested negative for explosive materials.
