Johnson defends Trump voting by mail

Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) on Wednesday defended President Trump voting by mail in — a method both have criticized — by arguing that Florida does not "allow fraud" like he claims other states do.

"I think some states have handled mail-in balloting well. I think Florida's a good example of that. They don't allow fraud. They have great systems," he told reporters. "But that is not true in other parts of the country, and that is the concern, especially in a state like California or states where they just send mail-in ballots to everyone for no reason whatsoever."

President Trump, who cast his ballot by mail in a Florida special election this week, has repeatedly criticized mail-in voting, saying "cheating is rampant in our elections."

"Mail-in voting means mail-in cheating," he said on Monday. "I call it mail-in cheating, and we got to do something about it all."

Speaker Johnson called it a "matter of common sense" that mail-in ballots "inherently" raise the risk of fraud, which is why Republicans are supporting election security legislation to sharply curtail the practice.

"It's much easier to patrol that, election integrity, if you're making people come in in-person, show a photo ID and prove who they are," he said. "That's why we continue to advance every election integrity measure that we can, because, again, if you don't have free and fair elections in a constitutional republic, you cannot maintain it."
