2:30Now PlayingMarkwayne Mullin was sworn in Tuesday as the ninth Homeland Security secretary, replacing Kristi Noem atop the beleaguered department, which has faced intense scrutiny over its immigration enforcement operations.
"With Secretary Mullin at DHS, we will continue our record-setting efforts to deport these illegal alien criminals from our country, and we are doing it at record levels, despite a very unfair court system," President Trump said at the Oval Office swearing-in ceremony.
Secretary Mullin, who became Oklahoma's junior senator in 2023, resigned from the Senate on Monday after his colleagues confirmed him in a 54–45 vote that fell mostly along party lines.
"I made this very clear that I don't care what color your state is," he said after taking the oath of office. "I don't care if you're red or you're blue. At the end of the day, my job is to be secretary of Homeland and to protect everybody the same. And we will do that. I'll fight every single day."
The Homeland Security Department — a sprawling agency that includes ICE, CBP, TSA, FEMA, the Coast Guard and Secret Service, among others — has been reeling since the January killings of two American citizens in Minneapolis by federal agents.
It has been without federal funding since Feb. 14 as Democrats demand reforms to immigration enforcement operations, leaving workers unpaid for over a month and leading to long lines at airports as TSA agents step off the job.
During his confirmation hearing last week, then-Sen. Mullin signaled he would make changes to operations while continuing to carry out the president's mass deportation campaign.
"My goal in six months is that we're not in the lead story every single day," he told the Senate Homeland Security Committee. "My goal is for people to understand we're out there, we're protecting them, and we're working with them."
Nonetheless, Democrats maintain that a change in leadership is not enough for them to vote to fund ICE and are demanding a long list of immigration enforcement reforms they say need to be codified into law.
