as posted by the channelPresident Trump on Friday said he sympathized with House Republicans’ decision to reject the Senate-passed bill to fund most of the Homeland Security Department, further prolonging the shutdown, now in its 42nd day.
“The Democrats want to let illegals come into the country — criminals, murderers, every kind of criminal you can imagine — and the Republicans just don’t want to let it happen,” he told reporters after landing in Miami.
The Senate early Friday approved a bill by voice vote that would fund all of DHS except Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP), which are already well funded from Republicans’ “big, beautiful” reconciliation bill that was approved last year.
But Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) broke with Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) by rejecting the deal and proposing an alternative measure to fund the entire department through May 22, a proposal that has no chance of passing in the Senate, which has already begun its two-week recess.
“I understand John Thune, and I understand Mike Johnson,” President Trump said. “They want to be sure that people aren’t coming into our country like they have for the last four years.”
