Newsom says he's under DOJ investigation

California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) on Monday said he is being investigated by the Justice Department, accusing President Trump of weaponizing the justice system to target him and his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, for political purposes.

"Donald Trump isn't just coming after me because of my mean tweets," the governor said in a video. "He's coming after me because I am considering running for president."

The governor said federal agents have been questioning family friends and associates as part of what he portrayed as a fishing expedition.

"He has directed his Department of Justice to investigate us," he said. "They have not found a crime — they are simply trying to find one."

Gov. Newsom compared himself to other political figures whom the Justice Department has targeted during the president's second term, including former FBI Director James Comey, former Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, New York Attorney General Letitia James (D), Sen. Adam Schiff (D-CA) and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D).

"One by one, anyone who has challenged Donald Trump has ended up on his hit list," he said. "And today, I proudly join that list."

Gov. Newsom said he has nothing to hide and told law enforcement that if they were looking for evidence of corruption, they should turn their attention to the White House.
