YouTube Description
as posted by the channelSpeaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) said he understood President Trump's decision to cancel the signing of a bipartisan housing bill on Wednesday as he seeks progress on an unrelated bill overhauling the nation's voting system.
"He decided — and I didn't announce it, I wanted him to announce it — but we're delaying this," the speaker told reporters. "As you know, he has a window of time before he has to sign a bill and he's going to use a little bit more of that window of time and we're going to go through this together."
The speaker said he expected the president to ultimately sign the housing bill within "days," and that he was going to explain the importance of the bill to the president.
"The president, when we go through the details of the bill, he's going to understand that it's a good product, and certainly something that fulfills his promises to bring down the cost," Speaker Johnson said.
President Trump has repeatedly demanded that Congress approve his SAVE America Act, which would impose strict new rules for registering to vote and casting ballots, among other changes, but it lacks enough support to get through the Senate.
Speaker Johnson said he spoke with the president about advancing it through a third reconciliation bill, though the prospects for a third party-line bill remain murky.
