Schumer slams Trump for canceling housing bill signing

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) on Wednesday slammed President Trump for canceling his signing of a major bipartisan housing bill as he waits for progress on an unrelated elections bill, the SAVE America Act.

"Trump is running away from one of the very few accomplishments that could actually help the American people," Sen. Schumer said on the floor. "Any time there's an opportunity for Trump to help the American people, he runs the other way, comes up with some idiot thing in his head."

The housing bill, called the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act, which passed with overwhelming bipartisan support in both chambers earlier this week, aims to increase housing supply and bring down costs.

Despite being a major priority for lawmakers in both parties, who see it as a way to address Americans' affordability concerns, President Trump called it a bill of "minor importance" and demanded that Congress first pass the SAVE Act.

The SAVE Act, which would impose strict new rules for registering to vote and casting ballots, among other changes, does not have enough support to get through the Senate, a point GOP leaders have repeatedly conveyed to the president.

"The SAVE Act will not pass, Donald Trump," Sen. Schumer said. "Get on board with this housing bill. Don't veto it, because it's so important to the American people."
