John Kennedy wanted him to be a special consultant on the arts, which was what Dick would have loved more than anything. He was home writing his own statement that morning because it had leaked to the press, to the New York Times, and then he called the White House in the afternoon, saying, I've got my statement ready, because Kennedy had asked for the statement to be sent to Texas, and the White House operator said, oh, Mr. Goodwin, don't you know the president is dead?
