1:25Now PlayingSen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) sought Wednesday to tie Abdul El-Sayed, the Democratic nominee for Michigan's U.S. Senate seat, to terrorist groups as he chaired a hearing on the Muslim Brotherhood's impact on the U.S.
The Texas Republican said Mr. El-Sayed was the son-in-law of "a leading member of several Brotherhood groups."
"Perfect timing for this hearing," he said. "Probably explains why no Democrats are here and none intend to attend. Because their campaign is now openly embracing terrorist organizations waging war in America."
He said that behind Mr. El-Sayed's victory sits a "much older and more entrenched institutional network," which he identified as the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR).
