0:38Now PlayingPresident Trump confirmed Tuesday that Dr. Marty Makary has left his role as commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) after weeks of pressure on him to step down.
"Marty's a terrific guy, but he's going to go on and he's going to lead a good life," he told reporters as he left for a trip to China. "He's a great doctor, and he was having some difficulty."
The commissioner's ouster was months in the making, according to reports, as he clashed with administration officials, lawmakers, drugmakers, biotech leaders, abortion critics and tobacco executives.
The final straw was reportedly his opposition to the approval of fruit-flavored e-cigarettes, which the administration authorized.
Kyle Diamantas, the agency's deputy commissioner for food, will take over the FDA on an acting basis.
