1:53Now PlayingPresident Trump on Monday said he supports suspending the federal gas tax to provide relief at the pump amid skyrocketing energy costs tied to the war in Iran.
Such a move would require an act of Congress, and Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) and Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) said they intend to introduce legislation to that effect in both chambers this week.
Gas prices have risen sharply since the war began in February, leading to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, through which about 20% of the world’s oil normally transits.
The national average for a gallon of gas is around $4.52, according to AAA — a 50% jump since the war began.
The federal tax is currently set at 18.4 cents per gallon on gasoline and 24.4 cents per gallon on diesel.
The president said he would support suspending the tax “until it’s appropriate” and maintained that prices would sharply fall once the war is settled.
“When this ends, you’re going to see it drop like a rock,” he said.
