Is Christopher Nolan's Odyssey actually "woke"?
The casting controversy — Lupita Nyong'o as Helen of Troy, Elliot Page as a Greek soldier — dominated the discourse. But Nolan is doing something far more theologically interesting than diversity casting: watch how he frames the Law of Zeus, the Trojan Horse as a sacred offering, and the moral harm caused when people commit atrocities in the name of religion. That's the woke element worth talking about.
Then I share a clip from Tuesday night's live stream, where I addressed the controversy with exactly the seriousness it deserves — in a bit I described as my audition for right-wing rage-baiting, in case this anti-MAGA thing doesn't work out.
Fair warning: the live stream clip is better if you to know the Coen Brothers' O Brother, Where Art Thou? I've been told only 5% of my audience will get it.
So if you appreciate it, then this one's for you.
