Putin is expected to stick to the same peace terms he proposed in June 2024—recognition of all four annexed territories and no large-scale ceasefire—threatening continued advances if Ukraine refuses. Russia’s military momentum is increasing amid visible Ukrainian political infighting and forced conscription, leaving Kyiv with little leverage. Trump likewise has limited bargaining power but could offer sanctions relief and renewed arms-control talks to “end the bleeding” and normalize relations. Domestically, Putin faces pressure from hardliners not to concede any territory, while Trump is accused by Western elites of “betraying Ukraine” for accepting battlefield realities they helped create by rejecting past diplomatic off-ramps. The upcoming Alaska summit is logistically feasible but highly compressed, with little pre-negotiation; unless talks run longer than expected, it will likely be brief, with Putin presenting a take-it-or-leave-it proposal.
