1:28Now PlayingThe oral care aisle is full of ingredients that sound impressive but do very different things once they’re in your mouth. Some support your microbiome. Others quietly strip it.
Here’s how to read the labels like a functional dentist.
Ingredients that get a green light:
✔️ Hydroxyapatite
The same mineral your enamel is made of. It supports remineralization without disrupting the microbiome.
✔️ Xylitol
A prebiotic that feeds the good bacteria in your mouth and starves the ones that cause cavities.
✔️ Topical fluoride
Not for everyone, but it has a place. It’s the systemic version we don’t need.
Ingredients worth skipping:
✔️ Charcoal
Trending, but abrasive enough to permanently damage enamel. Use rarely, if at all.
✔️ SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate)
A foaming agent that can strip your oral microbiome and trigger canker sores.
✔️ Triclosan and propylene glycol
Both disrupt the balance of bacteria your mouth actually needs.
✔️ Carrageenan
A thickener linked to gut microbiome disruption.
Your oral care should support your mouth, not fight it.
