It was synthesized in 1964 and found to have effects promoting memory, attention, and other cognitive functions, without being a stimulant or depressant. Researchers have struggled to decipher how it works, since it does not bind strongly to any neurotransmitter receptors or have a big impact on ion flows across cell membranes. However, it does affect the flexibility and behavior of cell membranes throughout the body. In the brain, piracetam changes the properties of neural membranes thereby modulating activity within acetylcholine, glutamate, dopamine and serotonin circuits. A few studies suggest that piracetam may help reduce ADHD symptoms.
