Idaho Falls Girl Scouts deliver supplies to children in need

IDAHO FALLS — The Idaho Falls Rescue Mission’s Ruth House serves women and children escaping from bad situations or who are working to get back on their feet.

Vicki Callantine, Ruth House lead supervisor, said the first step is to establish the needs of the women. Then they provide for those needs whether physical, mental, or economical.

Those who are physically, and or mentally able are required to find at least a part time job within their first two weeks of residency. Women at the Ruth House typically take four to six months to transition out of the house into a self-sufficient, stable lifestyle.

A local Girl Scout troop has helped children at the Ruth House by providing them with new school supplies, and clothes.

“They decided that they wanted to do something for the people in the shelter because they knew some of the kids came to school without supplies,” said John Wilson, Troop 342 Co-leader. “They got their heads together and decided that this is what they wanted to do,” he said.

There are six children currently living at the Ruth House.

Callantine said that they were thankful to receive the supplies and that it alleviated a lot of stress.

“It relieves such a burden off of the moms that live here,” said Callentine, “One of the major burdens that mom’s suffer with is how to provide for their children."

Scout, Bre Weice along with her troop aren’t unfamiliar with the girl scout motto, “to help people at all times, and to live by the girl scout law.”

“It was fun and I feel really good for doing it. I felt really good because I knew I was helping people,” Bre said.

Walmart donated a $450 grant to the girl scouts for the supplies, and Basic American Foods donated food to the Ruth House.
