1:44Now PlayingSTAND UP - I’m Natalia Hepworth here at Jefferson County Lake and during the summer you may be looking for an Island getaway, but here in EastIdaho you could actually have the chance to design a nearby Island in the DIY Island contest.
SOT: “I think it’s a great contest, I think it’s a great chance for the locals to get involved. I think it’s going to be a really fun family activity,” Liz McNamee says.
VO: The island on Jefferson county lake is in need of a face lift after native cottonwood trees were removed last year. The Jefferson County Parks and Recreation department is calling on the public for fresh ideas.
SOT: “Should we have more beach front? Or should we try to restore it into a Wilderness area? Should we put in a little heritage farm with fruits and vegetables?(Or) a water park?” Squires says.
VO: Rebecca Squires, director of Jefferson County Parks and Recreation says the trees were becoming a safety concern which lead to the decision of removal.
SOT: “Those cottonwood trees died and were falling over and creating a safety hazard so the Island had to be cut bare last year, but this is the people’s park,” Squires says. "So we wanted to give people the opportunity to have a say on what goes out on the Island.”
VO: Squires says designs need to be submitted on a 24-inch by 36-inch poster board. She says anyone in East Idaho can enter the contest, and she’s already gotten some creative entries.
SOT: “We’ve had inquiries from the landscape folks at BYU-Idaho and from cub scout groups. This is really a contest for all ages. We’re excited to see what people think and how they want their island to look,” Squires says.
VO: Parks and rec will select 10 entries to be voted on by the public at the July 2nd Independence Day celebration held at the lake. The winner will get a $100 Grand prize.
SOT: Really what should the Island look like? What are our needs here?” Squires says.
