as posted by the channelAMMON-- After decades of a lasting love a local couple passed away hours within hours of each other.
After 73 years together, Neldon and Helen Potter passed of natural causes on Dec. 7 and Dec. 8. Neldon was 91-years-old and Helen 90-years-old.
“Mom passed away 8:30 in the evening, and on the 8th Dad passed away at 11:45 in the morning.” daughter Nancy Potter said.
At the time of their passing the couple was living with their two daughters who took care of them, Nancy Potter, 72, and Kathy Potter, 70.
“Mom said that she would never be able to retire, that death would be her retirement, so she finally retired,” Kathy said
Neldon and Helen grew up in the St. Anthony area and met at a dance. The couple was married at a young age, Helen being 17, and Neldon 18.
"They met at a Golden Green Ball at a church activity. They were chosen to dance together,” Kathy said.
“She chased him down his fathers pea patch and tripped him and asked him to marry her, so they got married on July 4, 1943,” Kathy said.
After the couple got married Neldon joined the United States Navy, and served in World War II.
“He said he chose the Navy because he preferred to ride than to walk,” Kathy said.
They had four kids and worked as farmers for many years. Neldon also worked and retired from the Idaho National Laboratory. Helen loved to make crafts and sew, and Neldon worked in his shop crafted model planes.
“For fun they would take us camping, and picnicking, and swimming,” Kathy said.
"When we were little kids he would let us stand on his feet, (and) he would dance us around,” Kathy said.
Nancy and Kathy said they loved having their parents close, and that they miss speaking with them. They said their parent’s feelings toward each other were loving, and tender.
“We were just talking about why they stayed together for 73 years and mom and dad both said that people said there marriage would never work when they got married, so they stayed together 73 years to prove them wrong,” Kathy said.
