21:52Now PlayingIt's an exciting day for Life in the Word! Today we are starting a new book, and it is by far our longest that we've explored to date: the Gospel according to John. The Gospel of John is one of the most beloved books in the Bible for many, and I'm not sure if this is allowed, so don't tell anyone, but it's my favorite book of the Bible. Just between us, ok?
In this first video we did a deep dive on the historical/cultural and literary context of the book of John. My goal in these videos is not only teach you what the text is saying, but to also teach you how to read the Bible faithfully on your own. In this video we talk about the necessity of understanding context, and then we see how the context shapes the meaning of this chapter.
This first chapter serves to elucidate the central claim of Christian theology: Jesus is God. The deity of Christ is perhaps the most important thing that any Christian could learn about, and the book of John is a masterclass for understanding the deity of Jesus.
In this chapter alone we'll see that John makes the case for the deity of Christ by attributing divine honor, names, and attributes to Jesus.
