The president has the attention of the nation in a way that no other politician does, and effective presidents use that attention to their benefit. Teddy Roosevelt called the presidency a "bully pulpit" because the position afforded him the ear of the nation.
Over time, presidents have utilized different technologies to communicate to the nation. Franklin Roosevelt used the radio, John F. Kennedy used the television, and Donald Trump made prodigious use of social media (especially Twitter).
