Jakob Fugger was a renaissance billionaire worth 2% the GDP of Europe, and like most insanely wealthy people, he wanted to make sure people would still be talking about him in 500 years. So he built local chapels and other buildings, but the Fuggerei was his most unique project: the oldest public housing in the world. And the price of rent hasn’t changed since it was founded in 1516, because for all these hundreds of years it’s been paid for by a Fugger family trust fund. But in order to live there, there are a few rules in place. You need to have lived two years in the city of Augsburg, and live below the poverty line without any kind of debt. There’s also a 10PM curfew when they lock the gates, and you have to be Catholic, but… maybe Augsburg is worth a mass.
