…or so the story goes. But the real history might be even better. The story of the man in the iron mask probably came from a guy who wore a cloth mask a couple of times when he was being exchanged between prisons. There are different theories about why the man was made to wear a mask, but my favorite theory, proposed by actual historians, is that the warden put the mask on because he wanted to make everyone think “That mysterious prisoner the warden has with him must be super important. Wow, what a cool warden”
