The First Hungarian Republic (Első Magyar Köztársaság) also known as the Hungarian People's Republic (Magyar Népköztársaság), was a short-lived unrecognized people's republic in Hungarian history that existed from 1918 to 1919. It was toppled by communist Bela Kun and replaced by the Hungarian Soviet Republic. After the Aster Revolution (Őszirózsás forradalom) the Austria-Hungarian Empire dissolved. The First Hungarian Republic was established by the Hungarian National Committee and led by Count Mihály Károlyi. Soon it faced many challenges such as invading foreign armies from the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes and Romania (Hungarian–Romanian War). Learn more about the history of Hungary and Hungary after WW1; or interwar Hungary.
