0:49Now PlayingThe Russian tricolor flag design and its colors were inspired by the Dutch flag to some extent. The story goes back to the late 17th century when Tsar Peter the Great, who admired Dutch naval power and sought to modernize Russia, introduced the tricolor as the national flag. The Dutch flag featured horizontal stripes of red, white, and blue.
In 1699, Peter the Great visited the Netherlands to learn about shipbuilding and maritime practices. It is said that he was impressed by the Dutch naval flags, and upon his return to Russia, he introduced the tricolor as the flag of the Tsardom of Russia. The original Russian tricolor had horizontal white, blue, and red stripes, similar to the Dutch flag. Over time, the shades and arrangement of the colors underwent some changes, but the Dutch influence on the initial design is evident in the choice of the tricolor pattern.
These colours of the flag of Russia would also inspire the choice of the "Pan-Slavic colours".
