Why Ireland is Divided in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland

Ireland is divided into Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland due to historical, political, and religious factors. The division stems from a complex history of British rule in Ireland. In 1920, the Government of Ireland Act created two distinct entities: Northern Ireland, predominantly Protestant and in favor of remaining part of the United Kingdom, and the rest of Ireland, which eventually became the Republic of Ireland in 1949, predominantly Catholic and seeking independence. Religious and national tensions, particularly between the Catholic and Protestant communities, fueled conflicts like "The Troubles" in Northern Ireland from the late 1960s to the Good Friday Agreement in 1998.
