The Greek monarchy was established in the 19th century, first under a Bavarian ruler, later a Danish one. The Greek monarchy was first abolished in 1924 when Greece briefly became a republic. The monarchy was restored in 1935 with King George II. However, the monarchy's downfall began in the aftermath of World War II.
In 1967, a military junta seized power and established a dictatorship, forcing King Constantine II into exile. This junta's rule was marked by repression and censorship. In 1973, Greece transitioned to a republic via a controversial referendum, effectively abolishing the monarchy. The monarchy's abolishment was also influenced by the regime's unpopularity, growing republican sentiments, and international pressure. The Greek monarchy officially ended, and Greece became a republic. The last Greek king died in January 2023.
