0:51Now PlayingTo conquer Sumatra during the Japanese invasion of the Dutch East Indies the Japanese undertook a daring operation at Palembang on 14 February '42. Palembang was a springboard to Java and had oil refineries the Japanese wanted to capture.
In the early morning Japanese paratroopers landed around Palembang airfield. Aerial bombardments and strafing kept the defenders at bay. Palembang fell in Japanese hands undamaged. Sixty Japanese men landed at the refineries but were chased away by Dutch and British troops.
The next day Japanese forces made an amphibious landing at Muntok, Bangka and they marched towards the oil fields. The Allies retreated and thus South Sumatra was lost within two days. There would be fighting north of the island. This took place in the latter half of March, but these were mostly mopping up actions and the Dutch forces suffered from desertion and poor fighting spirit. Just like on many places elsewhere.
