10:15Now PlayingOperation Ostra Brama and the Vilnius Offensive were interconnected military operations during July 1944, part of the broader Soviet summer offensive, Operation Bagration. The primary goal of both operations was to liberate Vilnius (then Wilno, under German occupation) and reclaim control of the city.
Operation Ostra Brama, launched on July 7, 1944, was led by the Polish Home Army (Armia Krajowa, AK) as part of their plan to regain control of key Polish territories before Soviet forces arrived. Approximately 12,000 AK fighters attempted to capture Vilnius from the retreating German forces in a bold bid for Polish sovereignty, hoping to establish a Polish administration before the Soviets entered.
The Soviet Vilnius Offensive, spearheaded by the 3rd Belorussian Front, aimed to push the Germans out of the city. The Soviet forces quickly advanced and, by July 13, Vilnius was encircled. While the AK had initially succeeded in gaining a foothold, they lacked the strength to hold the city without Soviet help.
After the German withdrawal, the Soviets "liberated" Vilnius but did not allow the AK to establish control. The Polish forces were disarmed, marking a major Soviet step toward consolidating their influence in post-war Eastern Europe.
