0:54Now PlayingBy the end of 1942 the German Sixth Army was trapped in Stalingrad after months of relentless urban combat. By the end of January 1943 the situation was utterly dire. Hitler insisted the Sixth Army to fight till the death and promoted Paulus to the rank of Generalfeldmarschall, in an effort to boost morale. To no avail as Paulus surrendered shortly after. In poor Russian he told the Soviet delegation: “Field Marshal of the German Army Paulus renders himself prisoner to the Red Army,” and apologized that he hadn't received his new uniform for his new rank. Trying to lighten the mood he joked: “And anyway, my new uniform will hardly be of any use to me now.”
While in captivity he gave speeches speaking against Nazi Germany and was heard on Free Germany Radio, stating the war was lost for Germany. He became a member of the National Committee for a Free Germany and testified at the Nuremberg Trials after the war.
