From 1517 to 1917, Palestine was part of the Ottoman Empire. The area was administratively divided into districts that fell under Syria, with Jerusalem as an important religious city for Jews, Christians, and Muslims. The population consisted mainly of Arab Muslims, alongside small Christian and Jewish communities. Economically, Palestine was largely agricultural, with trade via cities such as Jaffa and Haifa. From the late 19th century, Jewish immigration increased due to the Zionist movement, which led to tensions with the local population. The Ottoman administration attempted to restrict immigration and land purchases, but retained control of the area until the British conquest in 1917.
