as posted by the channelWhen the United Nations voted in 1947 to partition Mandatory Palestine into a Jewish and an Arab state, the Jewish leadership accepted the plan but the Arab leadership rejected it, arguing it was unfair and that all of Palestine belonged to the Arabs. When the British withdrew in May 1948, Jewish leaders declared the State of Israel. Arab states responded by invading, beginning the 1948 Arab–Israeli War.
Israel survived and even expanded beyond the UN partition borders. But the land that was supposed to form an Arab Palestinian state did not become independent. Instead, it was divided between neighboring Arab countries. Jordan captured and later annexed the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, in 1950, claiming it as part of the Hashemite Kingdom. Egypt occupied the Gaza Strip, but administered it under military rule rather than granting independence.
Why no Palestinian state? Arab leaders had their own priorities. Jordan wanted to expand its kingdom, Egypt wanted control without creating a rival government, and the Arab League opposed anything that might be seen as recognition of Israel. Palestinian political leadership, already weakened by exile and internal divisions, could not form a state on its own. Only after 1967 did serious calls for an independent Palestinian state re-emerge.
