In a fiery press briefing, lawmakers warned that the escalating Middle East conflict is driving gas prices sharply higher, with California seeing averages surge to over $5.50 per gallon.
“Trump promised the American people he would lower costs on his first day — he lied,” Democrats said, accusing the administration of betraying working Americans as inflation rises and the economy slows. Ted Lieu pointed to troubling economic indicators, including GDP growth revised down to just 0.7%, rising inflation based on the Fed’s preferred core PCE index, and diesel prices crossing $5 for only the second time in U.S. history.
The criticism intensified after remarks from National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett, who reportedly said that hurting consumers is “the last of our concerns.” Democrats seized on the comment as evidence that the administration is out of touch with everyday Americans struggling to make ends meet.
Aguilar and Lieu also tied the economic strain directly to the widening Iran conflict, warning that continued instability could worsen both fuel costs and financial hardship for millions of Americans.
With political tensions rising ahead of key elections, Democrats are calling for accountability and urging Republicans to join them in pushing back against what they describe as reckless leadership.
