With nearly 300,000 British citizens in the Gulf, Starmer emphasized that RAF missions are strictly defensive, intercepting incoming strikes to safeguard lives and infrastructure. He also revealed that UK military bases in the region have been targeted by Iran, prompting the deployment of anti-drone systems, radar capabilities, and round-the-clock aerial patrols.
Meanwhile, tensions between Trump and Starmer appear to be rising. Trump publicly expressed “disappointment” in the UK leader, even taking a swipe by saying he was “no Churchill.”
The situation unfolded as US and Israeli strikes on Iran (February 28) triggered a wider regional conflict, with Tehran retaliating and clashes expanding to Israel-Hezbollah exchanges in Lebanon.
Adding to global concerns, the crisis has driven energy prices sharply higher and led to the effective disruption of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for nearly 20% of the world’s oil supply. As the conflict deepens, the divide between the U.S. and key allies like the UK raises serious questions about global unity and the future course of the crisis.
