33:01Now PlayingThe Lindsay Clancy trial has become one of the most closely watched murder trials in America — and Billy believes the case raises much bigger questions about postpartum psychosis, psychiatric care, prescription medications and the way the mental health system treats struggling mothers.
In this special episode, Billy breaks down the Lindsay Clancy case after 14 days of testimony as the prosecution rests and defense attorney Kevin Reddington prepares to present his case.
Lindsay Clancy is charged in the deaths of her three young children — Cora, Dawson and Callan Clancy — inside the family's Duxbury, Massachusetts home. Her defense argues that Lindsay was suffering from severe postpartum psychosis and should be found not guilty by reason of insanity.
Billy examines the evidence surrounding Lindsay's deteriorating mental health, her reported hallucinations and suicidal thoughts, her psychiatric treatment, hospitalization and the extraordinary number of medications she was prescribed in the months before the deaths.
Among the major questions: Were the warning signs missed? Did Lindsay Clancy receive adequate psychiatric care? What role could the medications have played? And could this tragedy have been prevented?
Billy also takes a hard look at husband Patrick Clancy and asks whether enough was done when Lindsay's mental health appeared to be deteriorating. He examines Patrick's involvement in her treatment, Lindsay's reported warnings about harming herself and her children, controversial internet theories surrounding Patrick, and what the actual evidence does — and does not — establish.
Plus, Billy breaks down the prosecution's strategy, testimony from Lindsay's psychiatric providers, the Commonwealth's argument that the killings were calculated and premeditated, and Kevin Reddington's effort to establish that Lindsay was suffering from a severe mental defect.
On Day 14, Reddington argued that the evidence already presented demonstrates Lindsay suffered from a mental defect and asked that the first-degree murder charges be reduced to second-degree murder — while the defense continues to pursue a verdict of not guilty by reason of insanity.
This case is about more than one horrific night in Duxbury. It raises difficult questions about postpartum depression, postpartum psychosis, maternal mental health, telemedicine, psychiatric medications and how the criminal justice system determines responsibility when severe mental illness and murder collide.
Billy gives his unfiltered assessment of the evidence, the prosecution, the defense and the people surrounding Lindsay Clancy as one of the country's most consequential trials enters its next phase.
