After taking over Hungary in 1526 and receiving its crown, the new Habsburg rulers set out on a two century long project of integrating the Hungarian kingdom into the Austrian Habsburg Empire. The tools used to do so ranged from the counter reformation, to attempts at restructuring the state itself into smaller subdivisions. However, the attempts at building a heavily centralised absolutist imperial state largely failed. The Austrians didn't account for Hungarian resistance against such an endeavour, which would eventually even spark open rebellion, neither did they account for the fact that they would need the Hungarians to survive the geopolitical struggles across 17th and 18th century Europe.
