The Napoleonic order completely shattered the political order and social contract upon which Austrian rule of Hungary had been built throughout previous centuries. At the end of the Napoleonic wars, facing crisis of political legitimacy, national identity, and economy, Hungary embarked on a multiple decade long project to reform and modernise itself, largely driven by a newly politically engaged aristocracy, to find a place within an increasingly modernising Europe. These efforts faced stiff opposition from Austria, which would reach a boiling point by 1848.
