Fletcher was running on the University of Memphis campus when police said she was forced into a vehicle after a struggle. Abston was indicted on charges of first-degree murder, aggravated kidnapping, and tampering with evidence, to which he pleaded not guilty. Prosecutors announced their intention to seek the death penalty against Abston, who was also charged with raping a woman in September 2021, about a year before Fletcher's killing.
