The police say that normally as a ploy to get you to talk, because people have a natural desire to tell their side of the story, even if their side of the story is just going to get them in trouble. What I normally tell my clients is, exercise your Fifth Amendment right and don't speak to the police officers, because if a police officer's decided they're going to arrest you anyway, I've never seen anybody talk a police officer out of arresting them when a police officer's already made that decision.
