9:22Now PlayingDuring his ill-fated meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Donald Trump offered “nothing short of extortion” for US security guarantees, according to one foreign policy expert.
Sam Kiley, world affairs editor at The Independent, told LBC’s Shelagh Fogarty the Trump Administration’s demands for Ukrainian minerals for security were calculated from “fraudulent figures”.
“We don't know what those mineral agreements were,” Mr Kiley told LBC.
“The understanding was that there would be a very broad brush because the original offer from the Americans was frankly, nothing short of extortion.
"It came with a demand for back payment for a fraudulent figure for what the Americans claimed that they had spent [on Ukraine]. They claimed 350 billion. The real figure is closer to 120 billion.”
In exchange for US military protection, the Trump Administration has repeatedly sought to gain access Ukraine’s vast mineral reserves as payment, a bid which Mr Kiley said amounted to least 50 per cent of all of Ukraine’s reserves in perpetuity.
Mr Kiley added that an inked deal between Kyiv and Washington would have given the Americans “skin in the game”, but that did not eventuate.
“And then, of course, we saw that ambush by JD Vance, joined in by Donald Trump against Zelensky,” Mr Kiley said.
“If you look at the positions being adopted by the United States of America, they are 100 per cent Russian positions.”
