9:16Now PlayingThe Atheists in Kenya Society (AKS), the first atheist organization in Kenya, is battling for its existence after a Christian bishop and politician filed a case to suspend its registration. Bishop Stephen Ndichu claimed the AKS's activities violate the Kenyan Constitution, arguing that they undermined religious beliefs and created "cynical effects" within society. AKS has been vocal about what it sees as a disproportionate religious influence in the Kenyan government, despite Kenya being officially a secular democracy. Harrison Mumia, President of AKS, expressed concern about the state of secularism in Kenya, stating, “[Atheism] is not palatable within the government because religious groups are powerful in Kenya. The current administration is ultra-religious and is running on that strength, so we may see secularism diminishing and religion playing a bigger role in public life.” The case highlights the tension between religious and secular groups in Kenya, where an estimated 755,000 of its 55 million population identify as atheists.
